WEEK 12 - The End of an Era
WEEK 12 - The End of an Era
Posted on August 18, 2017 by Kelsey Ervi

Hey Followers,

You heard it here first: Today is the last day of my internship at WaterTower. It’s been a good run, but I think it’s time for the baby to fly out of the nest. Time to “walk the plank” as the pirates say. I overheard Joanie and Kelsey saying I was getting “fired” this week, but I think they just don’t understand that when my internship is over, I just leave. Classic Joanie and Kelsey, always trying to find some big dramatic way to end things (i.e. Kelsey poisoning Joanie with guac, Joanie “coming back” to WaterTower and kicking me out of my office.)

The good news about being “fired” from my internship is that Joanie and Kelsey are taking me to dinner, and said I could keep hanging around if I wanted to. I love working for and learning from Joanie and Kelsey. They’re both really smart, and they both sing their sentences sometimes. They’ve had me read lots of great plays, allowed me to meet a bunch of new people, and given me some insider knowledge* about the DFW theatre scene.

Not only have I learned a lot about theatre from my internship and my mentors, but this summer I’ve learned life things as well. Fresh out of college and seeking direction, this summer has been eye-opening in my hunt for trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I got to assist with the casting process for some great plays. I got to assistant direct on my first professional production. I took improv classes over at Alternative Comedy Theatre (ACT) with some awesome teachers. I made lots of new Facebook friends, and some REAL LIFE friends too! AND I wrote this strange little blog to document my weeks as an intern.

During my last week here, I’ve been working on a project similar to those in the past: updating our actor database! I’ve been entering information for all of the actors who auditioned for Hit the Wall, Season Generals, Pride and Prejudice, and Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, as well as compiling a list of actors to call in for some of the shows later in the 2017-2018 Season. This week we also had a meeting to discuss some potential Intersections ideas for Pride and Prejudice. I’m really pushing for a regency dance party (but more on that later).

OMG! The best part of the week was last Sunday when we had a pool party at Joanie’s house! I love a good party, and I made the sangria, so be sure to check out the food blog I’m starting next week for “22 Sweet Summer Recipes!” #foreverablogger

Now that my internship is over, this means the blog must come to an end as well. I’ll miss the blog. We truly became friends.

Things I learned this summer:

  • In order to be a good intern, listen a lot and generally just work hard.
  • Theatre is magic. There’s nothing a little age makeup can’t fix.
  • Viewpoints is a great way to build an ensemble.
  • As a director, sometimes it’s good to ask more questions than to give straight answers.
  • Stipends are motivating.
  • I got a mosquito bite ON MY NECK this morning – not something I learned, but I wanted to tell the bloggers about it.
  • Theatre people are weird and interesting everywhere you go.
  • Sending an email can’t hurt, it’s worth asking.
  • You can’t please everyone, and someone is ALWAYS going to have an opinion about what you do.
  • This is the song of the summer.
  • This is also the song of the summer.
  • This is the summer of Kesha.
  • Confirmed: Joanie is allergic to guacamole.
  • Joanie “doesn’t get it” that in Texas, we dip our pizza in ranch dressing.
  • Everyone in the office likes chocolate.

Bye.
Miss you already.
Last Blog Ever.
Ever Ever.
Goodbye Cruel World.
Goodbye My Almost Lover.
Bye for real.

Bye.

Xoxo,
Tiffany
